I visited this excavation site
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorvik many times in the late 70s and early 80s as a child. I loved standing and watching the people metres below me carefully digging and brushing away the mud and revealing amazing things (well amazing for a child – I particularly remember them discovering a rubbish pile!)
I had a series of bad history teachers who couldn’t bring the subject to life so ended up in the maths/science route which was fun and suited me.
