I have too much school reading to do, I don’t have much time for pleasure reading.

The Stone Reader and am so moved and awed. Billed as “A Movie For Anyone Who has Ever Loved A Book”.
About a guy who picks up a critically acclaimed book he’s had for about 30 years, but had never finished. Starts to read it again, and is floored, wants to read everything this guy has ever written, only to find out the book is out of print and the author’s fallen off the face of the earth. This movie documents his quest to find out what happened to the author.
books are a great passion of mine, but reading usually is something done alone, so I like the idea to share my passion (and my books) with other people.
let´s see what happens!

So many books, so little time …
I’ve got a few people interested, AND the store I work for offers 20% off on book club selections when your group is registered (for free) with the store, so that’s good incentive. Even though I’m the one who started it, I feel pushy, trying to make the initial selection. But I think it would probably take us a long time to make a decision for the first book if we all put our two cents in having totally different interests and never having met each other…
I decided that the club will alternate each month. Non-fic one month, fiction the next, repeat repeat. that way the people interested in both can do both and the people interested in one or the other can just participate those months.
I’m thinking of Freakonomics or some other interesting, good non-fiction book to start off with. I would suggest Don’t Think of an Elephant, but its a political book, and I had a few people mention that they’d like to avoid political books in a group where the opinions are probably very strong and varied. What fun is that? But if thats the majority opinion, that’s fine.
I finished Female Chauvinist Pigs by Ariel Levy a week or so ago. Excellent book.
Right now I’m reading Matilda by Roald Dahl.
im so impressed by everyones entries

(1) in The Dark Age Ahead so far, does anyone have any objection to that being our non-fiction choice? Or any more suggestions?
(2) As for fiction, here are some of my preferences, some coinciding with Kris’s pic, or other’s entries:
Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice. Here’s an interesting review
calling it the most literary of all her work.
Willful Creatures: Stories
by Aimee Bender
On Beauty: A Novel
by Zadie Smith
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
by Roald Dahl
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. (one of my favorite authors)
and Swann’s Way by Proust
