Tonight I chilled with my friend Kate. She is a bare-footed white girl whose whole life pretty much revolves around loving the youth on the streets of her area, where everyone knows her name(it’s possible!). She wanted KFC so we went there and I paid for her food because I appreciate her. While we were still in line, a man asked if we could buy him a few chicken wings. Kate said of course, because I just bought her food so now she can buy him food. 20 minutes later we were sitting with this gentle giant of a homeless man floating in a KFC booth over a flood of his tears. I actually met this man before because he washes windows at a gas station nearby, but I was grateful to spend more time with him and hear his heart. This is one more man that knows my name in H.P. but more importantly; this is one more set of shoes I was able to try on.

I’m not really from Highland Park(HP is a part of Detroit), but my boyfriend is. I have an incredible Love for my city and the well being of it’s people, but recently I especially love Highland Park.
If you have ever spent time in the hood you know that everyone knows everyone on the block. The invisible walls of segregation in Detroit is thick, and black people often don’t trust a white person on their block. But when those barriers break over time, it’s a beautiful thing. I’ve had someone pat me down before letting me enter their home, and this is before I gave them a ride to church! Who knows, maybe one day HP will be my home.
