When I was in college, I had to take PE class. Being an ex-Boy Scout I decided to sign up for an “easy A” and took a backpacking class. It only had one requirement…hike the Grand Canyon. We went on several weekend short hikes, then one long one over a holiday weekend of backpacking on an island off the coast of Georgia. Then, the moment of truth came during Spring Break when all 12 of us piled into a gigantic mobile home and drove from Atlanta to the Grand Canyon where we spent the better part of a week. It was a truly amazing life experience. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

How I did it: Hiked from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. One day down from the South Rim, one day across, one day up to the North Rim, and then reversed the hike. This was a very challenging hike and the only real downside is that there is donkey shit everywhere on the trails. Also, there were a lot of tourists. The North Rim is prettier (and fewer tourists) but the South Rim has better views. Read how I did it…
How I did it: Foolishly, well thought out, but still foolishly. A friend and I were on a cross country road trip and stopped at the big ditch. We spotted the Plateu Point trail and on a whim we.... I..... decided we were going. Now we are expereinced outdoorsmen and not against hiking at all. We had equipment, water, food, an extensive FAK and the will. What we lacked was preparation. I am tired of everyone saying they want to hike the Grand Canyon and then not do it! No one wants to plan the trip (I do that for a living) or decide when to go.
I wish I knew someone who would committ to it.
Who wouldn’t want to go to this beautiful place?
Did this with my family as a teenager. It was very challenging, absolutely beautiful, and would like my kids to do it too. Very rewarding.
Ember39 Enjoying the warm weather.
I worked in the Grand Canyon one summer and was able to do a lot of hiking. The best was our hike from the north rim to the south rim. Of course we did it in July which was brutal but very rewarding
By 2010 year-end this will be done. I really want to do it, but all travel plans are currently on hold.

Yesterday my father and I put together a preliminary travel plan to take a hiking/camping trip to the Grand Canyon. We’re doing it!

A friend and I hiked to the bottom, spent 2 nights there and hiked out. it was awesome. I want to do it again, and every year for the rest of my life.
when we were at the bottom the stars were amazing, there was no moon, you could see the milky way jetting across the black sky. Satellites shot through the stars like super sonic jet planes..
we hiked to ribbon falls, i want to take a different trail every time i go.
