The asparagus bed is doing well, but I really need to put in some Jersey cultivars.
Next spring we can harvest for a couple of weeks! 4 years ago

Just put in 11 2 year old crowns in a raised bed 2 weeks ago near Sacramento, Ca. I haven’t seen any sprouts yet, but am optimistic! Can’t wait!! Been wanting to do this for a long time and finally got my proverbial stuff together! 5 years ago

Yesterday, in the final beams of daylight, I planted nine asparagus crowns. This morning, the trench was full of rain, so I tried to ditch some of that out. I’m counting this done, since I got them in the ground. 5 years ago

The year of asparagus. If I do nothing else this year but finally grow asparagus, I’ll consider myself a huge success!! 5 years ago

With the 5th good strong sprout coming up, I figure my asparagus plant is well on the way to becoming established. I’ll leave the new shoots on again for this year – next year I will start to take a few to eat. 5 years ago

Last year I thoroughly prepared a patch for my asparagus. I’ve tried to grow asparagus before but with very little success; I’d get very few and very spindly shoots come up and the last plant died off. This time I’ve taken more care and actually planted it correctly. Last year I had a few good shoots come up. This year the first 2 shoots have come up looking very strong and promising. I’m keen to see how well this patch will go this year, I’m not a big asparagus eater so I’ve only put in one plant. 5 years ago

I planted 9 crowns of asparagus in the specially set aside area on 25 August and another 3 at the back of the berry box. When it begins to shoot I will mark this goal as done. 5 years ago

I put in five or six crowns, and it turned a bit rainy and cold right away, so I wasn’t too surprised when they didn’t sprout up too quickly. But now we’ve had a week of near-record heat, and only two tough little spears (both from the same crown) have pushed their way up. I’ve layered compost on them four times and now they’re above the garden level just a bit.
The other crowns—who knows. If they don’t sprout, I’ll replace them with more modern varieties with the all-male sprouts. (I put in Martha Washingtons because that’s what there was available besides the purple variety. I may regret it when they sprout all over that part of the garden.) 6 years ago

I did it. I planted six asparagus starts. Not much, just an eight-foot section at the back of the garden where there’s probably not enough sun. But I did it. And the trees that make the excess shade will probably come down at some point.
I’m waiting for them to poke their tips out of the soil so I can bury them again. Planting asparagus – just PLANTING it – is a long process! 6 years ago

too long and when I went to the nursery yesterday I was told I should really have planted asparagus crowns in August.
Now I have to wait another year. 6 years ago

Once I built a 40’ long wall about 3’ from a earth cut. It was along my driveway and faced south. It was about 2’ deep. I filled it with a mix of half manure and half topsoil and planted asparagus the length of it in two rows along the back. The front I used for tomatos, shallots, and other such goodies. The asparagus loved it! Delicious, too. It was nice to be able to go out and harvest it regularly across the season. In Seattle, where I was at the time, the season was long. 7 years ago

and we are still in the basics of gardening without killing. i doubt asparagus will make it here any time soon. 7 years ago

I’ve wanted to grow asparagus for a long time, and I’ve hesitated because of the stupidest thing—the length of time it takes to establish. Same problem with peonies. Starts for both can be expensive and I just balk at the thought that I’ll spend a fair amount on them and not see the results for a couple of years. How dumb is that?
As a kid, I went with my folks every spring and picked asparagus by the roadsides. Now I buy it on sale, which still means it costs too much, and it doesn’t taste nearly as good.
In the spring, I’m digging up a bed and starting some. 7 years ago

We grilled asparagus the other day and it was awesome. Marinated in an asian/soy sauce and grilled with the lid down, they were the best asparagus I’ve ever had! 8 years ago
