I want to know what it takes to be a firefighter what steps should I take to become 1?

How I did it: I started out as a dispatcher. One day I was invited to ride the truck to experience what it was like on the other side of the radio. The adrenaline rush was outstanding!
Soon afterward, I joined the volunteer fire department in my community. I took training every week and eventually attended the fire academy. THE IFSTA class was 200 hours and I was one of only 10 females in the county in the class. After the basic training, I took additional classes on Inspections and Arson Investigation, Hazardous Materials, and Hydraulics. I learned many things that oddly enough still serve me well, 30 years later.

You must be strong – very strong. Work your shoulders, forearms (grip) and legs – hard! Learn to master the CPAT (especially the stair climber). Run 1.5 miles fast until it is easy. Read, read, read – Fire Periodicals, Fire engineering. Fire Chief, etc. Practice vocabulary, IQ tests, puzzles, any kind of Q and A multiple choice test you can get your hands on, even the Arco books. You may not see any of the questions again but the practice for timing and finding the correct answer among the multiple choice distractors is priceless. Do memory tests where you look at a map for several minutes, take it away and answer questions about it. Keep your mind active, stay away from the TV. Surf the Internet – look for practice tests/questions from various departments. They are out there! Talk to people who have taken the exams. Better yet – go take an exam for a department you may or may not want to be a part of – study this test – memorize all you can. When you leave – write everything you remember down. Get a couple of guys together and you can duplicate the test. I have done it before. Finally – go into the testing process with the mind frame that if there is only 1 position available – it will be yours. Shoot for number one. Read. Workout.
I have found the guitar package I want yesterday, I will be putting a deposit on it and it will be mine in 1 month, hopefully. Still not sure what the first song I will learn.
well I am now married to my beautiful wife monica and I graduated the Air Force Firefighting academy about 5 months ago and am now on my way
Being a firefighter is awesome. I knew it would be a lot of work but it’s so much fun as well. I’m on a small volunteer fire department in Wisconsin and also work with the DNR in the spring. It’s very rewarding.
