How I did it: Taking the LSAT was necessary for me to get into law school, and it was hands down the hardest test I think I've ever taken.
First up, taking the LSAT requires you to register for it on LSAC's website. In order to do this, you need to register for the website and then pay a fee to take the test.
After you've done that, you need to STUDY LIKE A MANIAC. DO NOT - can I repeat myself? - DO NOT act like the LSAT is a big joke. Don't even THINK about walking into your testing site without having studied hard. The LSAT, like many other admissions tests, is teachable - but unless you've learned how the testmakers think and how to identify the right answers through a prep course, prep books, and several practice tests, you will be wasting your money taking it, and you will NOT look good to law schools.
Prepping for the LSAT can be expensive, but DO NOT underprepare. I really can't stress this enough. I took the LSAT during the fall semester of my senior year at college, when I thankfully had a lighter course load. You should be studying for several hours most days of the week for several weeks before you take the test. At the very least, spend SOME time working on LSAT stuff each day until your testing date.
After buying multiple study aids, I hit the books HARD, and I managed to achieve a score that put me into the 77th percentile, i.e. I did better than 77% of the people taking it do. It was a decent score to be sure - one which allowed me to get into a decent law school, but to go any higher, I think I would've needed to take a prep course.
Good luck to anyone who attempts the LSAT; it's a tough test! Read how I did it… 4 months ago

How I did it: I took a 4 month course to prepare for the LSAT. I attended almost every class (& made up the ones I missed online) and did the work required. We took a diagnostic test on the first day of class (a full proctored LSAT) & I took the following tests as well to see my scores increase. I also took the LSAT preptests that questions were not pulled from to make the course books. There are 5 or so huge textbooks you get from Kaplan and they are extremely helpful.
