Though I never saw myself as being particularly successful, I have loved doing stand-up comedy for the past 3 years and fully intend to start doing it again once I have succeeded at a few other things that have become my priorities.

Though you have your bad gigs (and anyone who pretends they havent had one is lying, OR…its on its way), those few fantastic gigs leave you on such a high you wonder how you’ve gone without doing this all of your life.

You also meet amazing people, and oddly enough, you fit with them.
Stand up comics are a different breed of human… a somewhat socially-inept, self-conscious but confident, extroverted yet shy breed of human. Yes… a number of contradictions… that’s a stand-up comic!

The first stand up I ever watched was Ellen DeGeneres on some HBO special I believe. I was about 10 at the time and I couldn’t believe that people get paid to make people laugh. Later I listened to the works of Jerry Seinfeld and Mitch Hedberg, and I realized that if I could have any job with the prospect of becoming famous, it would be stand up comedy. I love making people feel better after they have a crappy day, and lately laughing has been the only thing keeping me alive. I can’t do much at 15, but give me some time, and I’ll be performing soon.

What a feeling... 2 years ago

I can’t put into words the emotions I felt the first time I did stand up. There was 100+ people in the crowd. And I was great. Got out everything I wanted to say. I was hilarious. Awesome night. And I have been performing ever since. I’m moving to hollywood to get into comedic writing/acting and of course stand up.

Making People Laugh! 2 years ago

Probably the things that makes me feel the happiest are making people laugh, drawing attention to the absurdity of life, and telling stories. I have been trying to use the energy I have about these things to get me on stage at open mic at a stand up place. I have written probably 30 minutes worth of material, but I have anxiety about it every time I think about it. I am determined to do this by New Years.

Just do it 2 years ago

Comedy is a lot like sex. Your first time is bound to be a bit awkward, but after you finish for the first time, you can’t wait to try it again.

Your best bet is to try to find an open mic comedy night somewhere in your area. Always call the place to make sure they’re having the event that night—don’t just trust their website or what Google tells you.

You’ll feel a lot more comfortable if you have some material ahead of time, so I’d suggest writing a few jokes and rehearsing them.

I want to try it at least once 2 years ago

I publish some humor on the internet, and once was contacted by someone who anted to hire me to do a stand-up comedy routine for an club event! I declined, but ever since then, I’ve been tempted to try a spot at the local comedy club, just for larks. I’ve been a Raging Granny for two years now—I might be good at stand-up. :)

I did stand up for about five years. I had not planned on doing this, but I was lead into it, and met the right people along the way.
