this has proven to be harder then i thought. i “do” music for a living. i’m a music director for the church i attend, i own my own studio and travel some performing. there are 2 things that slow the song writing down. 1 is time. finding the time and 2 when i do find the time i hit a brick wall and have nothing to say.
i talked with a friend of mine, who is a very successful songwriter and he says the trick is sitting down for 3 or so hours a day and just play/sing and out of that songs start to birth. i’m not able to spend that much time a day but i’m doing that once or twice a week and it’s working. he also told read fiction, listen to others songs, sermons, conversations, radio, and write down everything that has potential in a song. i’m reading more, listening more and they are starting to come.
I have written a handful of songs since i’ve been on 43things. more are coming and i’m feeling very inspired.
docrivs what's up, my 43 things friends?
i’ve written a couple dozen songs, but i could have written about 100 times more than that if i wasn’t so lazy and such a procrastinator. i am going to set a new goal for myself: 12 new songs before the end of the summer. that’s only 2 songs per month, and they don’t have to be masterpieces, just songs.
Of Course it’s worth doing -
My first try – this site – and I came across this fellow – a songwriter – and thought – here’s the subject for me. Myself – I see a singer/songwriter – even tho dry-spell sadness overcomes – “at-times”, the waver back and forth – but surely, once again, around for they’re everywhere – circles – can’t seem to move away from them – always back around – and again, I sing a song
I came upon this page – in search – wondering …is there a place – out there to find – the like mind …I’ll try.
Writing, connection – was my goal – some kind of ramble-wordy poem – comes out with rhythm so the song of back and forth, of sing-song time – was attractive. No matter barren, lost and dry – ya gotta try another try – it will be back – if given time – and not to worry …within the lines – rather – spread out -
Free form – what shall I call a ramble – are there others – understanding …?
Conversing letters turning, tap-tap fingers keeping time – back and forth – with one another – inspires …pulls the words from sleepy minds – wake up
Collaboration excitement – friendly creation -
So …I’ll wait – in hopes – for similarity –
rough, smooth – no matter~
1. Try writing songs on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm
2. Stop thinking about writing a song, and start writing.
3. Think of a subject I want to write about.
4. Listen actively to a lot of music.
5. Be ready when inspiration comes calling.
It’s a never ending task…
I simply write down what my heart feels and move my fingers in such a way that my guitar sings the same tune.
