I go to Harvard. Which means I’m supposed to save the world once I graduate. Except I don’t know what I want to do. So far, I’ve only found out what I don’t want to do because Harvard kicks my ass and I figure the subjects I can barely pass aren’t worth majoring in. I need to decide this by December at the absolute latest.
How to figure out my major
How I did it: I thought about everything I like to do and what would be the best choice. I also thought about how I could best help the world, and I finally decided, that I would choose Environmental Science. I dont yet know what my minor will be, but i am very glad that i decided my major:D
Lessons & tips: Think about what you really like to do in life, choose what makes you happy.

I’ve been going to community college for about one year now, taking some general education, but mostly electives. This doesn’t bother me, and I’m not ashamed to tell people where I go to school, but I always get tongue-twisted when asked what my major is.
I don’t have one simply because declaring my major means that I’ll know what classes I have to take in order to transfer to a state school, and that will start the process of moving towards that transfer. The problem is; I’ve heard way too many stories about people I grew up with who went straight to state schools, picked their majors, graduated, and now realize they don’t want to have anything to do with that degree.
My parents have X amount of dollars put away for my college education, and I don’t want to piss it all away on a major I’m not 100% sure about. Community college only costs about $500 a quarter, including books. I feel like I’m too young to know what I want to do with the rest of my life. Every year my opinions, interests, and lifestyle changes…so it’s hard for me to predict anything at this point.
On the flipside, I don’t want to be one those people who spends 6 years in community college trying to figure themselves out. A lot of people who graduated high school class of 05 with me will be getting their degrees within the next 2 years, where as I haven’t even started taking the first steps toward my own. I know it’s stupid to compare my goals/progress to others, but I feel like that it’s necessary to at least take the first step of committing to a major within the next year.
So hard to chose just one, especially when your interests are varied (like mmine), I think I have finally chosen the one…until next week when I change my mind.
I too had difficulty picking a major…came in SO sure I wanted biological sciences w/ the intention of going to med school. Tried a straight up english major for awhile. Ended up a poly sci major w/ an english minor…..LOVED IT!
My advice…don’t limit yourself to what might be logical for what you THINK you want to do after your undergrad years: be it, med school, law school, or the advanced art of underwater basket weaving.
Take classes you’re curious about. Try a major you think you might be interested in. INTERN in a field you think you might be interested in. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t like it. Thank god you found out now rather than later.
Don’t limit yourself to what you’re good at. Discover what you’re passionate about, even if it means working a little harder because it doesn’t come as naturally or easily. What’s easiest usually isn’t what’s best for you.
Remember that whatever discipline of grad school you might be applying to in the future….they like diverse majors!!!
And most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!! You will never be this young again!!! Make mistakes and learn from them!!! Stay up until 3am debating politics, religion and all the impolite subjects! And then make out with that person!!
Have fun kids- it’s not necessarily the best time of your life; but, it certainly is a great time. :)

I have always wanted to help people. I figured that nursing would be the ultimate way to do that and that’s what I went for. During the whole process though I kept failing the pre-requisite classes (school was giving us doctor grade courses instead of nursing level) and when I was going to the hospitals and stuff I became more interested in the patient’s history than I did on checking their vitals. It got to the point where I wanted to learn cultural backgrounds rather than clean bed pans. I am all for aiding those who can’t help themselves when ill but I felt like an impostor wearing a nursing uniform. I decided to switch my major to cultural anthropology and follow the passion of my heart in studying people groups.
Just remember, you can choose anything you want as your major but when you live life you arent stuck to that. I say go after your passion. If there is a major for it then get into that vein and soar. I am extremely happy that I left nursing and studied about various cultures. I have learned so much and even developed my photography and have lived in and traveled to various countries. Your major is just the starting point. Get into something you love and find out how you can use your passion and your major to make the best of your life.
I decided the best thing for me to do is become a doctor of some sort. This way I can help others and still make the money I deserve ;)
