play music for a living

I was stuck on thinking that playing music for a living meant that I would have to play with a band and get a record deal, or something like that. I am now beginning to study music therapy in relation to kids and teenagers who are struggling with confidence and life in general. I’m taking a child development class at a community college at the end of the month. I am learning that there are many ways to play music for a living, and am looking forward to incorporating them into my life.

My band spent the last weekend in a recording studio recording a reality tv theme song that we wrote. It was amazing. We created the opportunity for ourselves and it is really working out. Another day, another dollar, another step of living the dream. Sure I still had to go back to sitting at my desk on Monday, but little by little.

Well, not quite making a living yet, but my band just scored a great songwriting gig that if all goes well, we should be seeing money on a semi regular basis. It’s so exciting. We’ll be in the recording studio this Friday laying down the track. I can post more about it once it’s a done deal. I love my band.

I really want this to happen NOW. There’s no time like the present. It’s so hard to play an awesome show at 10:00pm on a Sunday night to have to wake up at 6:00am to go sit at a desk for 8+ hours. It’s time we make this happen. I have no doubt that we have what it takes, we just need to do it. Lose the safety nets and jump. Sure I say this all now because it’s Monday morning, but it feels like it’s getting to the now or never point. And we just received our first royalty checks, so we’ve had a taste, and we want more.

I haven’t seen or played my drums in almost a month. A break feels kind of good and all, but I’m ready to get back into it. I hope I’m not too out of shape and didn’t forget the music. My band has been productive though, we did an awesome photo shoot and are working on a pro package. Hopefully 2008 will be just as if not more successful than 2007. I’ve always wanted to be a musician but have ended up with a ‘sensible’ day job and turning 30 next year reminds me I’m not getting any younger. Would love to take the risk but am too scared :(

I basically do this now, but I want to make more money and get more exposure as an artist…especially outside of Ohio.
