You know, while I was in college this was a relatively easy task… perhaps it was the gobs of extra time we dedicated to it. However, in the last year since leaving the University, I am falling behind. Maybe its because I have a technology related position, so when I come home in the evenings, the last thing i want to do is jump on my computer to learn about the latest and greatest tech-news.
I’m not sure this is a reasonably feasible goal for me anymore. Which brings me to my next idea. Because my strength of being young in this technology field will eventually end (and some new hot shot out of college will trump me), perhaps I should realize my fate now by shifting gears ever so slightly. Instead of using technology as my main profession, use the knowledge I’ve learned as a vehicle to fuel one of my many interests in a seperate field.
Also, the face of technology is changing rapidly in this growing globalized economy – that the kind of position I dreamed of occupying when entering college is dramatically different then what will be available in the future. The strides made by India and China (and as Tom Friedman says- “The flattening of the world”) is restructuring the way we do IT work in the United States.
For these reasons alone… i think I need to spend some time thinking about this issue and gear up for the future.
