I’m smiling to see so many cool and fun to read posted entries as people who consider doing this, share what they are going through. For many reasons, on so many different levels, I just hope to see many, many people play jazz piano, so that this important art form is carried on to future generations. I hope that all of you obtain the inspiration to really go for it, no matter what it takes to get there… and for anyone who happens to stumble onto my entry here, sometimes you just have to let the music do the talking for you: http://www.last.fm/music/PABlo+Bley/Thanks+Giving+Day

Now I feel like I have the means to actually practice on a regular basis. I have a few books that should keep me busy for a while, too.
Really enjoy doing this – taking slow steps but gradually learning more chords and patterns – can play more pieces without music and getting better all the time. However a very long way to go!
Made an entry and it disappeared! Hope I’m not posting twice.
I am having so much FUN! Using an easy bass to the twelve bar blues amd the exploring scales for each chord, I have found some of the riffs you hear so frequently in jazz and rock, Its only very basic stuff but great to be getting to know the keyboard – instead of having my eyes translate the dots into the notes required for, say, a Mozart sonata. LOVE Mozart, but can’t play a single thing without the music!!!! How embarrassing is that! Decided to dump written music entirely for a month so I can really get to know my piano.
Been spending some time on the blues scale of C Have found that little and often is good. Can now play 3 octaves with some confidence – also managing to use these notes to explore phrases and get a feel for improvisation. Now getting to know scales of F and G, and using these notes to try improvising to 12 bar blues.
listening – bill evans, errol garner and the bad plus.
learned classical style and enjoyed every minute of it – although I am not in any way a good pianist. I am “tied to the dots” and can hardly play anything from memory!
My dad was a jazz musician and I would love to learn to improvise and play jazz style.
Have been getting better at using different kinds of chords and and can play many more things and remember chord progressions more easily. Still working at this and play piano for 30 minutes or so most days – can lose myself totally in what I am doing when I play so very therapeutic. Not yet able to sing and play at the same time – too many things going on!
i’ve just gotta get a piano, some theory, a teacher, and some extra time!!
plus maybe a little talent ;-D
I want to get good enough on the piano that I can play ragtime, vince Guiraldi(sp?) gershwin, etc. Maybe even play for an audience someday.
