Blinking, Breathing & Sketching
Rebuild Your Vision By Sketching
“Sketching” is one of the most beneficial habit you can pick up to improve your sight.
Natural vision teachers call it different names. Bates called it “shifting” and here’s what it is according to him in his Better Eyesight Magazine 1927,
“Shift your glance constantly from one point to another, seeing the part regarded the best and other parts not so clearly. That is, when you look at a chair, do not try to see the whole object at once; look first at the back of it, seeing that part best and other parts worse… This is centralizing… Your head and eyes are moving all day long.”
I was totally stumped by this when I first discovered it. Being myopic since I was 8, I forgot how I use to look at the world. I’ve always thought to everything clearly is the way nature meant it.
But as you can see from that quote, that’s the case. It’s important to note that “sketching” is a habit, not an exercise. Practice it often enough and you’ll find it seeps into you like water to sponge.
People with perfect eyesight don’t even realize they are doing it.
To help you “sketch” – and therefore rebuild your vision – it’s useful to imagine that there’s brush attached to the front of your nose and as you look something, you are “sketching” the picture.
The point of the brush is to remind you to move your head as you sketch, not just your eyes.
This is the natural way to see and it puts the least strain on your eyes.

my eye!
I just received this book in the mail. I have already read the first few chapters. I like the approach so far and the tone of the book.

my nephew
I am a very visual person, I am constantly looking at everything!
Lately my eyes have been hurting. My vision has gotten worse in the last few months. It’s making me feel horrible! I think part of it is spending way too much time staring at this flat screen.
I have been increasing the font size on my computer which I now see is not a good thing. The idea is to challenge my vision. I have a mirror set up beside me on the computer. It is annoying because I hate to see myself in the mirror. The reason it is there is so that I can ‘catch’ myself squinting, furrowing my brow or resting my chin on my palm. I would love to avoid wearing glasses. I think it’s a possibility. I just need to start working on it now!

I’m going to have it daily for a few weeks. So far I have had it for 3 days in a row.

Uh oh. Beet juice too strong for my stomach, at least first thing in the morning. I might take a break from the beet for a few days.

I got a pair of these a few weeks ago. I noticed they helped my eyes a little bit right away. I try to use them daily.

It is based on the Bates method. I found out about it from a woman online who teaches classes to improve your vision. Ester

I did a course of vision therapy for 6 months and although I’ve wound down the exercises I still try and do bits and pieces. Unfortunately my job involves staring at the computer screen although so it’s undone most of the good vision therapy work but I do try to take regular breaks, look away from the screen, blink, do some visualization and relaxation.
I need to step things up though – do some more exercises and work work more on the relaxation and visualisation. I think things will improve once I’m finished with this job and once I’m managing stress better.
