drummers of the world unite!! 22 months ago

I too am a drummer who happens to love jazz. That’s my main focus of my jazz gigs. I also play a mean dixieland washboard and have been playing since 1981. I have had gigs where people tend to slow down. It’s terribly frustrating to me to get solos which are musical enough. It just seems so easy to get those great drum ideas moving when I listen to greats such as Art Blakey and Joe Jones, but when it comes to me soloing, that’s definitely where I need work!!

jazzdrummer is contemplating mastery

Getting closer! 22 months ago

I think one of the characteristics of a master is being able to stay focused on what one is playing while listening to others play, but not being influenced by what they are playing (unless you want to).

What I mean is this: lately I’ve been doing some gigs where the other musicians rush terribly. If I stay focused, I should be able to listen to them rushing while I keep steady. On top of that, I should be able to make them sound pretty good by not getting swept away.

I think everybody can hear a drummer who rushes or drags, but if the drummer is solid, then others’ time can be less than perfect and it’ll still sound pretty good.

Anyway, this is just another little step in mastering my craft.

Stay tuned for more!

I've got to live up to my title. 2 years ago

So I was asked to be in a band, cause they need a drummer and I am the only person they know that would be interested… but I dont know, cause I really am not that good, and I dont want to make them look bad as a band, so I am going to start practicing…well trying to practice and hopefully find someone to help me and like give me lessons are something.
Cause wouldnt that be so cool to be in a band?
Yes, yes it would be.
So we’ll see what evolves…./:
