But you know the negative self-talk kicks in. The best one I received recently was from someone with a rather ascerbic and blunt personality. The compliment was, “You are not a boring person. For the sake of (those around me) always stay not boring.”
Mind you, it wasn’t that I was interesting—clearly I was “not boring.” But this person doesn’t say ANYTHING nice for the sake of politeness.
So, I’m thrilled to be “not boring.” Maybe it’s true, but I don’t feel “not boring.” I feel completely uninteresting.
So maybe I’ll say positive affirmations in the mirror? Not really my thing. Hmm, the jury’s out on how to believe compliments. Any ideas out there?

I might believe new ones. Old ones repeated are no longer compliments, but routine statements. And generalisations aren’t really compliments. Compliments need to be specific.

There was a demo at work to day, for a potential big client. Part of it was showing the software I’ve been working on (as part of a team, but I’m the only one who’s been there since the start).
Anyway, apparently the demo went well, and the head of SoftEng (one of the people involved in the demo – there were a few, all showing different bits of the application) called me up to say, thanks, well done, it’s looking really good, and a lot of that is down to you.
Anything to keep the troops motivated… :-)

A couple of days ago Dunk gave me a compliment on the bread I make. Of course, at the time I didn’t realise it was one, and thought he was getting at me for there not being any. Minor argument ensued. Oh dear. I really need to learn to recognise a compliment when one comes along…
Then yesterday, he was a bit more obvious. Meeting him in the afternoon, he told me I was looking ‘gorgeous’. While I’d love to believe this one, I can’t. Doesn’t mean I don’t like hearing it though…

I’ve just seen someone with the goal ‘write down every compliment I get’. I hope she won’t mind if I borrow from her, and expand – compliment, do I believe it, why/why not.
Of course, this assumes I get any compliments, and remember them.

Great goal! One that is attainable and yet so hard for people, especially woman to hold. I will…I will!
