I performed spoken word at my school’s talent show a couple of months ago and we (me & my friend performed together) got the best feedback ever! It was so comfortable. Once you really get into your poem, and the audience is responding positively as you’re speaking. GAHH, it was so liberatin. We performed for three days and I loved it .. so glad I put myself out there!

I was very lucky a couple of months ago to volunteer at the YouthSpeaks! Poetry Slam competition and got free admission to the show. It was so inspiring. I’m a poet but I’ve never read any of my work at a show or competition. One is because I don’t have any access to places that allow students to these things and two because I haven’t acquired the ability and power to do it. Don’t get me wrong, I REALLY, REALLY want to, but, well I don’t know. After that show, I started writing poems that would sound better and make more sense when read aloud. One day I will, one day and I’ll come back here and post when I actually do it and the experience of it all.

I’d like to learn how to do spoken word. I’m a poet, but usually I report images and abstractions, from my experience it looks like spoken word is more concrete. I always strive to stretch my poetic abilities and I’m trying to do so by writing some spoken word and eventually performing it at an open mic.
Any tips are appreciated :)

Performing Spoken Word is one of the most liberating experiences one can ever take part in. Eventually, you get over the nervousness and the sweaty palms and you begin to sink into your own comfort zone giving way to the Spirit of what you are about to let everyone hear. If you have the passion for it and you have a lot to say, Spoken Word is a powerful form of expression. Be unique. Be creative. Create your own ebb and flow. The more you push it, the more people will see how serious you are and you can continue to let your Spirit take flight through a talent only God could give. My goal is to eventually break free of the chains in which I feel I am held in. Sometimes all you have to do is speak to be set free. And remember, Life and Death is in the power of the tongue!
