Cable TV you have stolen my time.... 9 months ago

Out of all of my time sucks…and there are many…cable tv has got to be the worst. On the other hand, I have learned a lot about the legal system from Law & Order, forgotten many facts about heroic figures from The History Channel, and kept up on the news from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. However, I can do all of these things online if I really want to spend the time. I think I’d rather have the $60+ a month and the kick in the backside to make better use of my time.

Recently I moved from cable to DSL (save money there). Recently I have been purposely not turning on the TV to see if I miss it. And I don’t! That may be due to iTunes and NetFlix.

And all the best shows are on PBS anyway. I have netflix anyway for the TV shows I love the most. We want to sell our tv and buy another couch to put in it’s place so that instead of staying glued to the idiot box, we can talk to each other and entertain friends.

I don’t need to watch as much TV anymore and its costing a lot of money to have it. Save money buy DJ equipment and read more.

I still watch a lot of the shows via high-speed internet, with fewer commercials. :)

did it. 22 months ago

now they want their box back. And I have to take it to them, or they’re going to make me pay, more. wondering whether I just need to lose the tv altogether.

Just did this yesterday, and I don't miss it at all 2 years ago

Honestly the only reason I had a cable TV subscription was to appease family members staying at my place for a while, and needed their daily dose of TV.

Personally I can’t stand sitting in the same place just staring at something for extended periods of time. I have to keep moving, or at least doing something.

But now it’s been well over a year since the last lengthy visit, and I haven’t watched TV at all since then, so it was time to make the phone call to save a few hundred dollars per year.

Done but not sure 2 years ago

so our cable is cancelled. We got NetFlix. Over all we are going to save about $30 a month, and we almost NEVER watched it… and I tend to getm bummy and sad when I do go through stages of watching lots of dum TV. So it is for the best… but I am going to miss the daily show

I cancelled my cable and it's beautiful!!! 2 years ago

I was told I had to physically bring the cable box in. I felt like just rolling down my window and tossing it on their front steps but I walked it in like a good boy. TV puts so many time restraints on me, I didn’t realize that I was living my life according to when shows were on. Screw that! Now I rent from netflix and watch tv shows minus the commercials and films when I want and as a result I’m eating less, going to the gym, reading more and feeling better already. Cable is all commercials with the occasional fluff piece show in between. It ain’t worth it. Plus I save money.

We thought about it for months 2 years ago

We now have no cable TV and this is what we have gained so far:
When we eat dinner we talk to each other and enjoy each other’s company without distraction.
No worries about “bad” advertisements popping up while our young son might happen to be looking at the screen. There are few benign advertisements as it is.
No cable bill. No cable bill increases. We had been downgrading our service as the rate increased- television is not getting “better”. Tivo was nice but not good enough.
We listen to more music now. We’ve bought a subscription to sirius radio.
Upgraded our netflix. We can get the shows we want on DVD and watch on our time, without adverts. No worries that the tivo will fill up.
going to read some books too, but that’s for another list
