This American Life is one of my most favorite things in the world
If I could be in any way related to just one of the episodes my life would be complete.

Is this cheating…? Another thing on my list was to get a Student Teaching Award. I taught a freshman composition class last term for which I designed my own syllabus. I played a few clips on the first day: Ira Glass on the art of storytelling.
The class turned out to be ridiculously intense, perhaps because I take writing personally and seriously… because stories are how we make sense of times that may not make sense. I demanded the same of my kids. One of the principles by which I teach is that everyone’s body has to be on the line, including the teacher’s. One of my students “discovered” why she needs to write. She interviewed me today for a segment on her student radio show. She wanted to talk about what writing can do. Apparently, she had cried when writing for my class. (My own latest bout of writing brought on a slight case of the hives, and so yes… apparently, we’re at some kind of limit. And as any good writer knows, that’s the point when we can turn up really interesting, revelatory stuff.)
I asked her after our “taping” if she had been listening to This American Life since our class, and she said, “Oh yes. A lot.”
Teaching can be so amazing…
I don’t want to be featured, I just want to contribute. Oh, and is it just me or does anyone else find Ira Glass’ voice to be one of the most comforting out there?
See image- this prompted to me Google search for Ira Glass, in turn actually creating first time I have ever seen what he looks like. Oddly enough, he looks exactly as I pictured. I think I preferred it when Ira Glass was a powerful voice and not a “real” flesh and blood person.
