How I did it: I graduated with my master's degree in December 2004 and applied to 5 doctoral programs. I got into all 5 programs and chose the program with the shortest time span. I started my doctoral program in August 2005 and graduate this week May 2009. Lessons & tips:

How many more to go? How many interviews does it take to get invited to serve as faculty member at a nice college or university? Is there a magical number? If so, I hope my number is 1.

So, 8 months after setting this goal, I’ve now sent out 9 applications, gone on one interview and have no offers. At least I’m making progress toward it.
key to my future

Maybe I am foolish for getting my masters degree for only one reason. I cannot be a college professor without first getting my masters. When I get the job, then i’ll look at the PHD. I really feel like this is the key to a happy and successful future for me. I hate my current job, although I am able to get my foot in the door at the local college because of it.
I want to make a difference, a real difference. Creating programs to encourage economic growth isn’t what I want to do. I want to open doors for students. I want to release my passion yet again, after so many years. I want to open the world of excitement and opportunity for others. I want to be a professor. I don’t just want to be any professor at any college. I want to be a professor at my local college. I want to better the leadership & facilitation of the department. If only the staff knew how deep my passion was. If only they knew that someone I know is interested in funding this program. If only they knew what a difference I feel I could make. If only they could give me a chance.

I have been a professor in both Mexico and in the U.S. I think that both experiences have been totally amazing. For me, the “ideal” life includes a bit of teaching, a bit of writing/research, and a bit of my psychotherapy that I love doing… and the teaching is something I totally love and can not ever getting completely rid of. Right now I only teach as an adjunct and love it because I can stay immersed in my field, and yet still have the thrill of sharing with new students as they stretch themselves and explore their own paths a bit more… plus it keeps me on top of the current trends in the field and really reinforces my learning…
plus, what is better than being paid to be the center of attention and being paid to be continually learning.. and TALKING to people who actually take notes about what you are saying? :) Actually, the real thrill is just being able to share in the experience of others as they learn new things and watching their minds expand…

It’s not that I gave up on this, it’s that people change. My life has changed directions and every day, it’s becoming more eviden tthat my life is dedicated to writing. So, I give up old dreams to embrace a new one.
