"Read the Survival Guide!!"
How I did it: Decided at last minute, got on a couple of
email lists, fluked out and got a ticket and a space in one of the established
villages within the city, got a passport, loaded up the car with camping gear
(hadn't camped in 20 years), pointed the car in south and drove till I got
there.
Had never driven that far in my life before, never been to the U.S.
solo and had no idea how to get there or what would happen when I did.
Was
pretty shell shocked when I got there and hid in my tent, tried to sleep, woke
up the next morning to see a guy fishing gear out of the bonnet of a VW
bug...he was wearing fake fur underwear and big fake fun fur boots....he took
me under his wing and stuck with me for the whole rest of the Burn. With
him I met the coolest people!! Had the most bizzare conversations and saw
the wildest things.
There is no time on the Playa...things just happen as they
are supposed to. There is so much to see and you will want to go here and
there to take part in various things...but really don't try too hard. The
experience will be what it is meant to be for you.
Lessons & tips: Definitely bring lots of water, baby wipes
(trust me), fun fur (it actually gets cold at night...bring a warm hat, lemon
juice to cut the sting of the playa dust, SPF 50, goggles, a bike you don't
care about...also zip lock bags are a must for keeping things organized, fairly
dust free and MOOP. (read the guide for info on MOOP)
You are camping so think
about that when planning food and cooking.
