DoctorTeeth says, "Oh Sky Cake, why are you so delicious?"
Last night was my brother’s second bachelor party; his first one ended up kind of horrible, so his future father- and brother-in-law threw him another one to wash the taste out of his mouth. There were just eight of us, having a bbq, standing around a campfire, and drinking beer. Then, we retired to the cabin to play some poker. Texas hold-em, naturally, as that seems to be the most popular.
With eight guys around the table, I thought I was going to go out pretty fast. I’d seen poker played on tv – sadly, mostly due to the Celebrity Poker Showdown – but never played myself. I was being fairly conservative, folding when I thought I had no chance, but gradually I felt more comfortable bluffing and playing the odds. I figured I would be the favourite to go out first, but I was actually one of the last three people around the table, outlasting even my brother.
I have to tell you about my favourite hand. I had an Ace/King off-suit, and one of the guys raised to $40 before the flop. I knew he was just trying to scare us all off, so I called him. And so did my dad. And so did someone else. And you could see him slowly realize that we weren’t falling for it, and he got a little nervous. Then, the flop was Ace, Ace, King. I almost screamed I was so happy, but I played it cool, and four of us around the table were throwing down chips like nobody’s business. The guy to my left kept raising me every round, and I kept calling. When it was time to show our cards, he showed his pocket Kings, smiled and said “Full house, Kings over Aces.” I smiled and showed him my cards. “Full house, Aces over Kings.” I could almost hear his heart break!
So yeah. I ended up going out third overall, and there was a LOT of ribbing from the other guys about how I was a shark, but I had a really good time. And if they ever invite me out again, I would definitely go.

Patty watching my little daughter
I play poker on the net, but I have never had a chance to play a real poker. Well, once… I played it with my brother, but we were so high on weed… We made up some new kind of poker but I didn’t remember much.
Anyway, it’s so different from playing online, where you can’t see the other’s faces. None of my friends likes poker, so I will have either to make them learn it and play with me or find some real players somewhere :)

savmot is wishing this site were called 1000 things
I play on line, but I want to play for real. Just with friends, and real live cards instead of digital images of cards!

It’s quite hard to get the hang of initially, but extremely addictive and can get fairly time-consuming! I’m terrible at it, but at least it’s one thing I can cross off my list. :)

I played this last night with a few people. I went all in with 3 other people in the pot. I had a Jack-Four diamonds with my flush already out there. Nobody came close and I took something like 1/2 of all the chips in the game with that hand.

4 years now i’ve been playing this game, the last year playing as a job. still don’t have it 100% figured out yet, but i’m getting there. it’s a game of patience, self-discipline, logic, and good timing just to name a few. if you don’t have patience and self-discipline you may want to take up another hobby or profession. you won’t become pro overnight. it’s a fun game but can cost you alot if you don’t take it seriously enough, especially if you want to play just to make a quick buck. just don’t let it get the best of you.
good luck
see you at the tables
