I've figured it out! 2 years ago

Below are my six choices for exercise that doesn’t suck. I picked three to do right now and three for later, when I rock.

—On Tuesday evenings, I will go roller blading to my favorite tea shop (5.4 miles total).

—On Thursday evenings, I will do a dance fitness class for an hour (having walked there).

—On Saturday morning, I will jog to the dog park nearby and back (6 miles total). I don’t have a dog, which is weird, but I just love to watch them romp and play.

**These are interchangeable, but must be all completed by Sunday at 10 PM or I cannot use the car for the following week.

In the summer, say May 5, I’ll trade roller blading for swimming, sports team (crew) for dance class, and biking to the library for the dog park.

YAY! I did it! Now to get started!

The clock is ticking... 2 years ago

Eek! I have very little time left to complete my goal or I’ll have to give up my car to my ex!

Down to business. Here are some possibilities:
    1. Dance aerobics class b/c I need to learn how to dance.
    2. Training for a marathon b/c I love helping charities.
    3. Swimming b/c it’s just fun. (though a little cold right now)
    4. A sports team b/c I’ve never been on one.
    5. Roller blading b/c I like it and I could learn some tricks.
    6. Biking b/c I could save on gas.

I want to have three options that I can commit to doing once a week (total three times).

Wish me luck (and staying power)!

So I found some interesting dance fitness classes that might do the trick. Now to try them out…

new subgoal: schedule a hike 3 years ago

I used to really like hiking, but it requires a modicum of planning and having your shit together. But I just found out about a beautiful, relatively easy trail a perfect distance away from here (=far enough not to be packed, close enough not to be a major expedition). So my goal is to plan a trip there with Boy after my paper deadline, and actually follow through.

Two inexpensive or free ways 3 years ago

    Dancing and yoga.

    Kickboxing 3 years ago

It is quite fun. Beating the shit out of people is always a good stress reliever. The only problem is that it is only on once a week and who can be bothered to get up at 10 on a saturday to go kickbox?
So if I had my own personal kickboxing instructor this would be the perfect way to stay in shape.

I might have found it! 4 years ago

I got invited by some coworkers (including a Big Important Scientist, which is always cool) to go running with them twice a week. They assure me that wimps are welcome. Finally, exercise buddies!

does walking around the enormous shopping center count? 4 years ago

Almost all the grocery/household shopping in the area where I live is concentrated in this one HUMONGOUS shopping center. 3 grocery stores, Walmart, Target, a produce market, a bunch of discount clothing stores, you name it. Invariably, weekend errands involve at least 3 stores in this massive compound.

I’ve been trying to pretend I’m a European, or at least a New Yorker, by parking once and walking when I run errands there. It doesn’t suck, so that’s a start!
