accents... 1 week ago

I have an Asian accent….from my parents trying to teach me chinese at a young age which i can sorta speak fluently.
But I hate it when my friends make fun of me or the thought that the way i pronounce things bother other people. Maybe it’s just an insecurity.

I have problems pronouncing words like, bird or burger (or so i’ve been told since i can’t hear myself pronouncing them haha)
help?

I want to be understood 2 months ago

I came from Venezuela to California and then moved Maryland 5 years later.

I know I have an accent, I was living in caracas Vez all my life, venezuelans speak way to fast sometimes cutting letters for ex: “Para ya” which means over there we use it as ” Pa’lla see. now all this affects me when I speak English because my tongue is use to move this way. I try my best eveyday to get rid of my accent but it’s impossible so far.I would like to be understood clearly and concise.
does anyone here knows a method ?

So I then asked on of my other friends and she said the same thing except she added in “Yours reminds & sounds like Paula Dean”! I was like excuse me! How did I sound like Paula, I love Paula, but I hate Southern Accents! Also when your record my voice on a video camera or something similar I sound like a southern drug addict that just woke up and has a hangover!!!!!! SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an accent where my r’s and l’s get mixed up with my w’s. People say that it kinda resembles a southern accent, but I was born and raised in Chicago. I tried pronouncing the ends of my words more, and it worked a little, but it just was hard to remember to do that.

I’m thinking of getting a voice therapist, but I don’t know if that’ll help…

You do know that this is impossable? 1 year ago

Now I am not talking about “improving one’s elocution,” I am in favor of doing that. It is important to be able to be understood. But as far as a true accent, everyone has one. I moved to Arkansas from California and my son-in-law moved to Arkansas from Australia. Both of us have accents here, and when we return to our places of origin, we are told that we have “Southern accents.” I think that the most one can do is to trade one’s accent for a more “popular” one and then by so doing you are denying your roots. Speak like who you are, and not like the man on the 7:00 o’clock news.

I grew up in Germany although I’m fu%#@ing american. I hate my parents for that. I don’t have a strong accent but I think one can hear it a little bit. I really want to strangle my parents for that. Does anyone know how long it usually takes to loose an accent and adopt the regional accent when you actually live in the desired area?

redjellosquares is headed to diffraction.etsy.com and so should you!

Still a New Yorker at heart 2 years ago

When my family moved from New York to Florida when I was 13 I had an accent and would get made fun of, I made a conscious decision to get rid of it. Many years later I can still hear it in a few words like dog or talk, but for the most part it is gone for good.

it was an accident... 2 years ago

I was born in Scotland i had a mild scottish accent but then apparently 3 years in australia followed by a year in South Carolina really messes with your accent so i guess if u don’t like ur accent…move…i don’t know i’m kinda pissed, i get irish, america, english, canadian and everything between before people think Scoltand and when i tell them atleast 30% of the time they don’t believe me…

I did it!!! 2 years ago

I used a great ebook to get rid of my accent… http://www.eliminateyouraccent.com

Totally worth the price and for both native and non native speakers. YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEES! It’ll take you some time though… don’t expect the accent to disappear overnight, but it’s totally worth it!
