make a surprise visit to a distant friend

So remember that surprise visit I was planning?

As it turns out, his friend never sent me anything beyond that first message for several weeks.

Then, the week of my intended surprise, the friend contacts me and tells me that the coming weekend is the perfect time to come. But by this time, of course, ticket prices have gone up a ridiculous amount.

So it looks as though I’ll have to wait for another opportunity to play out this goal.

So I’m lounging in my room, eating an apple and listening to music when I suddenly get “I miss you” pangs.

It’s been an entire year since I’ve seen my college buddies (that’s what you get for studying abroad). I think of one who’s in New York (= still far away, but not as far away as Venezuela!).

His birthday is coming up. I look up some flight prices. Not terrible. I look at my work schedule for May. Not terrible. Hmm…

I send an email to one of his new friends in NY (thank you Facebook!) and leave it at that.

Then… A response! His friend is totally willing to help me out by finding out what his schedule is like and by giving me all the info I need on which flights, trains, and buses to take!

Within the span of a couple hours, something that seemed so distant is suddenly so possible!

Cue fantasy of how the surprise visit will actually pan out… do I jump out of a box? See if he spots me in the cafeteria? Pretend to be someone else?

I’m excited.
