I’m about halfway there now and can hold a conversation with Thai people in Thai on many subjects – I can read signs, order food, talk about Buddhism, life, the economy, feelings, travel, health, news and current affairs. But I struggle to read a Thai newspaper or keep up with Thai subtitles on English films. And I struggle with basic writing too – when I write it feels clumsy, like I’m a kid again – it just doesn’t flow and I really have to concentrate hard to form the letters with my hand. So I think I’ll start by practising writing for 15 minutes a day, and book a few hours in at the weekend every weekend to sit down with one of my Thai friends and work my way through a copy of Matichon or Thai Rath to help improve my reading vocabulary. Of course, other great suggestions from fellow language learners appreciated :-)
