I am a mutt, I am half Dominican and a quarter Aremenian and a quarter Cuban! My dad spoke 6 languages and one of them was Armenian! I have always wanted to learn to speak because when I was little I would visit my Armenian family and they would speak and I would feel left out.My dad passed away about 4 years ago and I want to learn, to feel connected to my Armenian family since he is no longer around! If you guys have any tips on how I can get started please let me know
So I have been taking real-life, adult Armenian lessons for about five months now. I definitely haven’t “learned” Armenian, but I can read now (probably at a first grade level) and I do know a lot more than I started with. I still don’t understand much and can’t say much back either.
My family are armenian, but my dad doesnt speak it around the house, only when im at my mesmom or aunt’s house.
My dad never taught me when i was little (so anoyyed!) and i’m determined to learn!
I Do know some, though, and i can understand quite a bit. I just need to make a bit of an effort!
I wonder if anyone knows where there are some vocab sheets or something? My dad is being really slack about helping me and i feel really silly trying to just talk because i know so little, you know?
I’m so happy I learned Armenian! It feels so good knowing my culture’s language and learning how to speak and write in Armenian. =)
i wanted to learn armenian to better communicate with the armenian community and after 6 months of just hearing it all day and asking what words are and mean i have successfully learned armenian.!! kudos for me!
Funny that I could speak excellent Armenian as a child, but growing up in Michigan, in English schools quickly replaced the language I’d grown up with following my grandmother around the kitchen.
I know some, enough. Prayers, conversation, etc. But I promised grandma I would do this a long time ago. Learn to read it and speak well.
I know a little Armenian- what I would refer to as “Toddler Armenian.” I’m trying to focus on actual conversation, though.
A TERRIFIC resource if you’re focusing on spoken is Thomas Samuelian’s dictionary of Western Armenian in transliteration. It’s out of print, but if you can find a copy, it is WELL worth it. I managed to score a copy from hyefamily.com, but they don’t have it anymore.
I just ordered the Samuelian Western Armenian textbooks through interlibrary loan- I hope they’re good. I want to get the grammar down; at least elementary grammar.
tech. i’m halfway to the goal…so….oh well, that’s ok…
can anyone ou there help me, or are you in the same boat as me?
