Right now our only computer is a laptop that we got around two years ago (maybe?). We splurged extra on it because we have lots of pictures and music and other stuff that we use on it… if I’d known how quickly this thing would deteriorate, I would’ve insisted on the cheapo model.
Sooooo… for one thing, it can’t be closed, because the plastic casing around the hinges is busted. This is through no fault of our own… the company sent us a notice that it’s a flaw in the manufacturing, and since so many people are having this problem they’ll fix it for free. That’s cool. Except the wireless card in this thing died around the same time the casing broke. These things both happened within a year of owning the laptop, and since then we’ve essentially had a very small, compact desk top computer.
So fast forward about 8 months… now other parts of the computer are dying. First, the #2 on the number pad to the right went dead, and now that enter key is also dead (I’m waiting for the rest of the number pad to slowly go). Then the volume went… no more listening to music or videos on this thing. Just in the last day or so, I’ve noticed that random patches of the screen, around the size of a pencil eraser, black out randomly for several minutes, even if I switch web pages.
We’re already shopping around for a new laptop, and waiting for the back to school sales. We’re planning on staying away from HP laptops this time. This is the longest ranting post I’ve done in a long time! I’m just mad that I spent so much money on this thing that is dying too quickly!

...it was only a matter of time. My poor hand-me-down laptop that has more air miles than I do has finally keeled over and died.
I think I’ll use my over-time & commission and get one after we get back from holiday.
I’m stunned how lost I feel without it. Maybe one of my ‘things’ should be ‘spend less time online’...

Last 2007, I bought a $893 laptop. It was a very cheap brand but I like it because it is the cheapest among 12-inch laptops at that time. After a year the LCD got busted. Too bad it was already out of warranty. When I sent it to the service center, the attendant told me it needs an LCD replacement that costs $297. I don’t think paying $297 is practical so I gave away my laptop to my sister and she’s using it with a monitor at home. 2009, my goal is to buy a new laptop because I need it especially for my kind of job. This time, I’ll make sure it’s durable and not that expensive. Hope I can have the money in 2 months. *crossing fingers

This entry has been brought to you with the assistance of my new laptop, which I named Baa.
So yes, I got it! :) Went and bought it, brought it home and installed everything on my own. So far things have been working pretty well, I’ve had some minor glitches but I’ve overcome almost all of them.
However, it will take quite a bit of getting used to for me. The biggest difference is the screen. I’m naturally used to my old screen and compared to this, it was much darker. This new brightness actually gave me a headache last night. Everything looks so different on this screen, too – I have to scroll down a lot more too see stuff; my photos look different; even my face looks different! o__o It’s like.. longer, somehow. It’s very confusing.
The keyboard is a bit different, too. I also need to learn to push the enter button harder, it’s stiffer than what I’m used to. :D
I have Windows Vista now. I know, it’s supposed to suck, but I’ll try to ignore that piece of information and work with it as well as I can.
I was saddened to notice that I don’t have any proper photo modifying programs here. I’m going to miss my old Picture It! program. However, there’s Picasa2 here, looks like I can do something with that.
I was also sort of sad when I realized that I will be losing all my Skype conversations (that are automatically saved). Now I won’t get to go through them later. But really – would I ever even have time for that? Maybe it’s even a good thing: I’ll get to start fresh.
But, in the end, I think I will be happy with this new laptop of mine. It’s not like I could have continued with my old laptop anymore anyways, eh.
PS. This was my 143rd completed thing here! :)

After paying the rent etc., I now have ~400 euros on my bank account for the rest of the month.
My current laptop, suffering from leprosy, dropped another piece of the screen frame last Friday. I can’t say that there’s much left of it anymore; now I can actually see inside the screen and my questions about what’s still keeping it together have been answered, as I can now see what cord is the screen’s lifeline at the moment.
So yes, I really need a new laptop, as soon as possible.
Christmas holiday is starting after next week and I’ll be going to my mother’s – I can’t really take this laptop with me because I’m scared of it breaking completely if I try to transport it. :s So I basically need to get a new laptop next week, if possible.
I found a laptop that costs only 399 euros and it should be a pretty good laptop. It’s a Toshiba Satellite L300D-13X laptop with 2GB RAM, AMD Sempron processor and a 15.4” screen.
I still have to consult my mother about this, she agreed to help me out a bit. Just not sure if she really has much money at the moment. I have the necessary money, but I would also like to buy some Christmas presents.
{phone call with mum & planning} Hurray! Mum agreed to put 100 euros on my bank account in the morning so I’ll get to go buy the laptop tomorrow!!! Woot woot! n___n Let’s hope everything works out for real.
And yeah, I gave up on my MacBook dreams for now – that bloody thing is just way too expensive. It makes me sad but oh well, what can you do. Maybe someday, when I’m not so poor.
