After two years of trying to have a baby, we had nearly given up. We had already decided that we would do nothing that required any sort of medical invasion. So, it was a lot of tracking my cycle with a basal thermometer and hoping.
I knew from that tracking that December 25 was going to be a “good” day. Plus, we both had it off from work. So, I wrote a letter to Santa Claus. I told Santa that Christmas was going to be a good day, and that I really wanted to get pregnant as my Christmas present. I remember my tears splashing the ink on the paper. I can feel myself tearing up a little now just remembering.
I addressed the letter to…
Santa Claus
The North Pole
...and put dropped it in the mailbox.
Rose was born the following September.
The next year, I wrote a letter to Santa, thanking him for his present. I enclosed $5 in the envelope, to go towards the answering of letters to Santa Claus. I don’t know to whom the letters to Santa go to – I heard that a social service agency opens them in case there’s children’s stories of neglect or abuse in them. In any case, I thought giving Santa five dollars in gratitude was the least I could do.

I remember going to see Santa as a kid. It is too bad that I can’t take my girls to see him here in Germany. I did take them to Sinterklaas in Belgium a few years ago.

...but I did stick it under my pillow, the way I did with teeth I had lost when I was little.
Besides, if he’s always watching, he probably knows what I wrote.
I don’t know if he’s granted any of my wishes (the things I wanted were more wishes than gifts) but I suppose I’ll know in time…

Well, I wrote them when I was little…but I’d like to write one again!
I hear if you burn them, they find their way to him somehow.

when I was a kid, I wrote my letter to Santa, right up until I was 17. Since then I write the years I remember to, but sometimes I end up not sending the letter for some reason…

Writing a letter to Santa is something every kid should get to do!! But even more worthwhile is getting to read kids’ letters and answer them. In my high school’s Gifted Program we got the Santa letters written by kids in the neighboring elementary school and we got to pretend to be elves (no one was allowed to be Santa) and we’d answer the kids’ letters! We weren’t allowed to tell them that they’d get what they asked for and we weren’t allowed to mention names of people they mentioned in their letters in case they said, “For Christmas I would like to see Billy again” and Billy was actually a dead brother or something… but we could tell them that Mrs. Claus was making cookies and Santa was trying to put on more weight and grow his beard out, or the reindeer were out on a training run… it was so much fun! Some kids would right asking about elves that had written to them the previous year. It’s so much fun making a kid’s dream seem more real!
