So I figure its best to start now, right? I went to my credit union, got some applications, and just need to decide what kinda of IRA I want to open. I plan to go back to my credit union in a week and open it. Any advice from anyone?

How to open an IRA"Incredibly easy"
How I did it: Thanks to ING Direct, I was able to open a Roth IRA with 10 dollars! I have had a savings account with them for a couple years now, and found a link to create an IRA account with no minimums, which makes it perfect for a college student who wants to save money, but does not have much to save. How I did it: If I had done it when I originally planned to, I would have that much more saved now. It's not a big deal to do it. Your local credit union will do it in a matter of minutes. I opened wiht $20 and have my direct deposit putting $10 per paycheck into it. Had I done that a year ago I'd have several hundred dollars already. Just do it. Read how I did it…

How I did it: I called my bank and told them I wanted to open an IRA. I set up automatic deposits of $50 to my Savings account, then the bank takes $100 from my Savings account once a month. I now have $702 because I'm earning interest in my IRA. It's great. Read how I did it…

I just didn’t get the money saved for it and I know if I have it I will contribute. So I just opened one with $20. Now I have a Roth IRA and if I can just put some funds in it, it is another step toward retirement.

I wanted to take advantage of the economy being completely hosed, and diverted some money from my savings to open an IRA account. Hopefully it won’t go down too much from here. :)

the economy being what it is, I’m not actually making any money right now, as a matter of fact, I’ve lost money. : ( I’m sticking with this for the long term goal, stay tuned.

...the paperwork for this in my hands finally. Now I just have to figure out how to fill it all out. I was looking through the packet this evening, and it’s quite confusing. Perhaps I will employ the help of my mother for this one. She’s awesome with these sorts of things.
I’m thinking of switching to buying some stock. The market is dropping and is supposed to stay low only this year. I’d like to get into something like this, with a higher earning rate…. I’ll think on it until I get my minimum saved.
Doing neighbor’s chores, added another $10. Brings me up to $40. Creeping closer.

Snookie asks,
“I've just picked up some brochures on IRAs. I need some opinions! Are they the best way to save for the retirement? It is not taxed? Also, how much interest do they earn? better than CDs? Are they risky? Just looking for any tips about them.”
