Lots of people have inspired me on singing and even the voices of thousand on YouTube so i want my vocal chords to crank it up a notch :p lol
I just want to be a good singer. I think I already sing pretty well, too.
I’m a professional actor, and the gig I have coming up in the fall involves me singing corridos (Mexican folk songs) and Mexican ballads… which is a step in the right direction, I suppose. But I am talking about old-school cabaret-style performing, or even -dream of dreams- singing backup in a band!
Everything I’ve ever really wanted to do, I’ve done, so I figure it’s only a matter of time…
Well, I sang at a wedding on Saturday and I got paid…so I guess that’s professional to an extent. I didn’t do nearly as well as I wanted or could have, but the bride was happy and very complimentary. I still need to work on my nerves a little before I can accomplish this goal and be happy with it!
I guess I’ve been getting paid for 25 or so years but only recently did I become a union girl… AGMA – American Guild of Musical Artists! Singing is more a lifestyle than a goal for me… I can’t seem to get away from it, even when I have tried!
I sing professionally for the San Diego Opera and sang both Opera and Operetta professionally in the San Francisco Bay area for 17 years prior to that. I am a Stage Director as well, but my primary love is performance.
I’ve been getting paid to sing since high school: everything from weddings, musical theater gigs, professional choirs and a cappella groups, paid soloist church gigs, recitalist, studio singer, etc.
The number one thing I’ve learned? The more STYLES you can sing, the more marketable your voice is. The most recent recording project I had required me to sing like a little kid for 3 children’s music CDs to be released in October. Not what I envisioned when I first got the call, but hey, if it will keep me doing more recordings, I’m all for it.
Also, killer sight-reading chops never hurt anyone, either. I had only 3 weeks to prep myself and 4 kids on over 45 songs for the recording. We only had 6 rehearsals to put the whole thing together.
I’m really working on getting into the studio musician/voiceover part of the business right now—unfortunately, my sleepy little town isn’t exactly a major media market like NYC or LA, but I’ve got a great network of friends in the business, and I’m willing to travel. I just got an invite to submit a CD to the producer of Sesame Street and Crank Yankers!
Even though I continue to sing professionally, my main occupation is as a vocal/choral teacher and theater director at a high school. The health insurance benefits are great, and I love interacting with the kids.
