I found a wonderful midwife, did lots of preparation for a beautiful magical out-of-hospital birth, and ended up having to be taken to a hospital due to complications. I was so upset and scared, but my midwife came and supported me there, and I don’t know what I’d have done without her. And she taught me an important lesson: You don’t get to choose your birth, but you’ll have the birth you need. It’s true. I got pretty much the opposite of what I’d wanted in a birth experience, but my baby is healthy and beautiful, and that’s all that matters in the end. 3 years ago

well, i haven’t decided whether or not i am going to use a midwife, but if i do, i found her! she is a lovely christian woman who places all her trust and love in God. I knew this about her in the beginning and it did make me a little wary simply because i didn’t know if she’d be overwhelmingly dogmatic or closed-minded… and not to be judgemental or to stereotype christians, but i’ve had a handful of bad experiences and my biggest concern was, if she’s going to deliver my baby, i want there to be a good chemistry between us. but she was my favorite kind of christian. the one filled with the utmost love and compassion for all walks of life, and if she has anything negative to say, she keeps it to herself.
as a midwife, she seems to have a wonderful history. she’s delivered about 450 babies and only about 5 of them did she have to take her women to the hospital. i don’t think she’s ever lost a woman, before, but i think she had two or three babies that died. two that were born dead and one that was confirmed by a doctor that there was nothing anyone could do, the baby wouldn’t make it. she’s been doing it for almost 20 years, too. so she’s got a heck of a lot of experience.
as a woman, she’s compassionate, warm and soft. very very very loving… seriously, i want her to adopt me. hahaha! if all is well with my pregnancy and there is no need for me to be in a hospital, then she’s the one to do it! 3 years ago

i’ve got an appointment with a midwife on thursday. i’m gonna interview her and see if she’s the one i want catching my baby! over the phone she seems sweet and soft and caring, reminding me a hell of a lot of my reiki master and friend who’s gotten me through some of the toughest poop of my childhood. 3 years ago

but i’d like to start looking into my options now. i’d much prefer to go as naturally as possible, avoiding pitocin, epidurals, c-sections, and the like as much as i can. of course i’ll do whatever i have to to deliver my baby, so if something’s wrong, i’ll go to the hospital… but more likely (statistically) things will go well and i’ll have the best birthing experience of my life. if i fall on the other side of the statistics, then i do what i have to do. but a midwife at home is what i want to do. i’d like to have the tub set up and the bed set up so that i have places to go when i’m ready. i’d like the liberty to move around and walk out my contractions.
i read up on this one fairly local midwife who seems amazing! i’ve read so many positive things about her from people who have had her as a midwife. she also comes from a big family and seems to have an amazing love for the birthing process. she seems very educated and has read books by authors i admire on the subject. one noted bonus was that she said she likes to pray before every birth. WELL COUNT ME IN! i just left a message and hopefully she’ll get back to me soon. i should probably also try getting in contact with other midwives and interview them and see who seems more like a match for us. 3 years ago

Both of the midwives we interviewed were terrific, so we went with the one recommended by my yoga teacher! I asked if she would take us on and she said yes so yee ha! We will have our first real appointment with her after Thankgiving. I am excited to cut ties with the icy ob-gyn! 4 years ago

We had our interview with the second midwife today—she was really great! She’s super experienced—over 800 births, and I feel I can really trust her. The midwife we saw last week was great too, though, so this is a tricky decision. They are in the same collective, and are back-ups at each other’s births, so there’s a chance that we would end up with both! Will take a few days to decide. 4 years ago

Next Thursday is unofficially our “Homebirth Day,” with appointments with two different midwives in the morning and in the afternoon, and a homebirth info session in the evening! I am especially looking forward to meeting the midwife recommended by my yoga teacher, as my teacher had such a great experience. 4 years ago

I talked to my yoga teacher about homebirth, and she was very excited! She recommended her midwife, a homebirth preparation class, an organization, and two books! I found and bought one of the books today (Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth), and emailed both the midwife recommended by her and the one recommeded by a friend of mine. I also emailed one more, just to have another option. Oooh, also requested information from the Bay Area Homebirth Collective about a pregnancy support group. Yee ha! 4 years ago

I got some good information about Bay Area midwives and Home Birth from a friend and my yoga teacher! Time to write some emails and make some appointments! There’s also an information session next week about home birth that I will attend with Sweet Hubby. 4 years ago

connie gave me the name of a holistic d.o. this could be my link to a midwife and a birthing pool. he-haw! ill show everyone i can do what i wish against the odds. just because they wanted to do it and they chose convenience over mother nature. ill not go to the hospital or have an epideral for this labor and delivery. 5 years ago
