It has become painfully evident over the span of some conversations on this site over the last several weeks how difficult this is for people. I have attempted to understand the need that some have to lace their posts with profanity along with a heavy doses of name calling in lieu of sticking to the topic. I have been unable to come to any true conclusions, just a couple of theories.
Theory one: Could it be that you are unsure of why you believe what you do in the first place, thus you are unable to logically defend what you are debating. Some people support certain issues just because it makes them feel good. They think they are doing the right thing, fighting for the underdog, making the world a better place. The reality there is no substance to this, thus making it next to impossible to defend. It takes action on our behalf to do these things. It is up to us to feed the poor, help the underdog, make the world a better place. If there is an inherent lack of understanding why the issue exists in the first place, it can not be defended logically.
Theory two: The maturity level is just not able to maintain such a debate. It is easy to get frustrated when you are attempting to place your beliefs into words and feel as though you are not being heard. It is maturity that enables us to maintain our composure and intelligently attempt a new tact and not resort to calling names. It is also maturity that enables us to accept the fact that we may just disagree and that’s ok.
There may be other components that make people behave in this fashion. This is just my attempt at understanding why some people can not have a discussion without resorting to name calling and sarcasm.
