This is actually my favorite job. I do this for community theaters in my area. I don’t get paid for all of them, but if I move to Baltimore I can join the Stagehand Union there and get paid the big bucks to do this.
Community theaters are always looking for good backstage help. I mean, when it comes to acting everyone always wants to be on stage but very few people sign up in hopes of working hard and getting no recognition from it.
If you really want to do this just get in touch with a theater near you. It is very unlikely they will turn you away.
