I went on my first 2009.hike today.
As Ziggy and I got terribly lazy during the winter we didn’t reach the top of the mountain we set out to, but it was still great to spend so many hours outdoors and treat ourselves with a fantastic lunch in a small family run restaurant afterwards.
Fresh wild asparagus frittata, home-made pasta with wild mushrooms, local wine and home-made grappa (with a slice of divine flour-free chocolate cake for Ziggy) were all delicious.

and it’s such a crying shame to close my eyes to it.When I go on a hike or a stroll for that matter, I always get the same feeling-I never want to go back to my tiny flat and busy office. I realize I can’t very well stay in the woods forever, but oh how i sometimes wish that was possible!

I live in a valley surrounded by the blue ridge mountains and I want to take advantage of the sceneary a little more often than I do now. When I was younger and childless I used to go hiking on a regular basis. I miss it.

Hiking Socks?!
Hey guys, last time I went hiking I got nasty blisters. I’ve read that socks have a lot to with this, that if you wear special socks and your legs don’t get wet: bingo, you don’t get any blisters. It seems Smartwool hiking socks are fine (lot of useful info on this site here: Wool Socks Info). Anybody more experienced can comment more on the socks and blisters issue?

January 06, 2008: Cattus Island Park
Distance: 3.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 0 ft (it’s literally at sea level)
Difficulty: Easy
Very easy and relaxing walk, nice views of the marsh and bays. It’s probably be much better in the spring but it was worthwhile anyway. We took the blue trail loop to the white trail that takes you up the beach, backtracked and then rejoined the blue trail back to the Cooper Environmental Center, which was a lot of fun. I have some photos on my flickr if you’re interested.
The next hike I have planned is Cheesequake State Park once there’s some snow on the ground. In early spring I want to head up to Stairway to Heaven on the NJ/NY border and the big hike I’m planning before summer is a 3 day, 28 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. Still trying to con at least one of my friends into doing it with me.

Oswald State Park, Oregon Coast. And I am going to enjoy it dammit! Even if I am hot & sweaty at the end.
