Such a beautiful instrument. Hearing Jacqueline Du PrĂ©, I’d love to be able to play like her
calamityistheworld is preparing for school and the challenges it will bring.
How I did it: I began to play cello in my first year of middle school (sixth grade). Everyone wanted to play violin, and I was determined to do something different seeing as how there were over 70 violins in all the classes combined. The cello was very attractive to me, and although it was bigger than me, I saw it as a beautiful challenge and wanted to make it my life. Others used the fact that we were provided with poor teachers as a… Read how I did it…

How I did it: I have played the piano for nearly 10 years and I wanted to test my ability on a different instrument: the cello. I started taking lessons and it was incredibly difficult and I ended up quitting the lessons. I can still play, but it is really hard. Read how I did it…

The Cello is one of the only instruments that gives me serious chills when played. I would love to be able to play such a fantastic instrument on my own.
I have planned everything: in a few day’s time I will collect my new cello (hired for the time being) and I have found a tutor who will come to my home during my lunch hour. All is settled. What I need now is patience and discipline. It will be hard. No doubt about that. There will be setbacks. As an adult one is painfully aware of how bad one can sound. Being a beginner is not easy, not good for the ego. But…damn it…I want to do this. I love the sound of the cello and I don’t mind if I have to practise for hours in order to get a perfect note. I hope that the fascination with the sound will keep me going at the beginning. I give myself three months’ time not to learn to play! But to understand whether this is something that I can do for a long time (I hope so). I hope to learn discipline and patience with myself. And I also hope the new experience will be delightful in itself.
mailmanoj Planning to be away from home, forever!
Wish I could play half as close as him soemday. want to own my own Cello. Want my son also toelarn to play Cello
A guy being interviewed on the radio the other day said that when you talk to people about guitar, they’ll say “yeah, I play a little guitar”; but when you talk about the cello, nobody says “I play a little cello,” even though everyone likes them. We should play a little cello, or a little sitar – why not?
Good point, and I’ve always wanted to play cello, so it goes on my list.
I really really want to learn to play the cello. You have no idea how devastating it is to not have the money to buy a cello and pay for lessons. I’ll be a freshman this year in college…does anyone have advice? I want to start playing now but I know it’s pretty unrealistic since I’ll be in school.
I now own a cello and have been practicing 3-5 times a week. I’m hopeful, that at this rate, I will be able to play in an orchestra in two years (community, that is:)).
I’ve been playing the cello since the sixth grade. It’s very relaxing and quite fun when you play with an orchestra. It’s great being a strong bass voice.
I’ve played an eclectic bunch of instruments over the years, but the cello stuck with me.
Such rich notes and relaxing melodies.
Wish I had the time to pick it up again. Just to calm my restless soul.
My mom used to tell me that she was glad the cello didn’t seem capable of playing a sour note.
