Great, did this earlier this year, didn’t think it would be that good being a diesel (as opposed to steam) but it was very good, and even though it only goes about 25-30mph when you’re in charge of a few hundred tonnes of loco it sure feels faster!
Did this on the Wensleydale Railway’s Driver Experience. Great instructor, used to drive Steam and Diesel trains and really knew his stuff.
Plus – you get to peep the horn!

And the subject he wants to teach is “how to drive a train”. He’s never done this, but here’s a place that allows you to learn hands-on. http://www.railroadinfo.com/triprprt/feather_01.html

When I was really little I was in the cab of a freight train. My dad was friends with the engineer. They agreed to let me push the throttle, and I moved the train a few feet down the track, then they stopped it. So technically I’ve driven a train, but I wanna do it again! I’ve driven a trolly down a historic rail line, but a trolly isn’t a train lol. I really want a career with my local commuter line after high school, so maybe I could drive trains for a living.

I went on a school Transport Society trip to a railway depot, and we got the chance to drive a diesel-electric passenger train along the siding between the maintenance sheds and the main line. One of our party even took the train through the train-wash.
Apologies to the people waiting for the Belfast-Bangor train that day – when we got back to the depot there was an angry driver, who should have already been at the station.
