Aloha! I am currently taking a hula class and thought it would be fun to learn the Hawaiian language. I downloaded “Instant Immersion – Hawaiian” from Audible.com. Sounds kinda hard from what I have heard so far, but would be nice to learn enough to have a familiarity with it. Mahalo!
My boyfriend is native Hawaiian and I want to learn the language of his people.
I lost mine some time ago.
But, getting a head start on the learning before starting classes is always good.
Exposure to the Hawaiian language is everywhere here, but in rather limited amounts since it’s not the “de facto” language.
But I did find a Hawaiian-English dictionary that has a good grammar explanation included, so I’ll begin studying that in my spare time.
An interesting thing though, is that from all the people coming to Hawaii from many different countries, I’m able to get exposure to many different languages and cultures almost simultaneously. A good experience for me.
Since Hawaiian is one of the official languages of Hawaii, it makes sense for language lessons to be free, but I never would have guessed it.
I just wish I knew that a long time ago. I should begin someday when I have extra time.

You know, as much as I would love to be able to do this, I don’t see it happening right now. At least not to a degree that I would be satisfied with.
So this isn’t really giving up, just putting it aside for awhile
I’m planning on moving there in a couple years and was wanting to learn some before i did. Have any of you found any books/software that you’d recommmend?
you can also learn some of the chants.. they’re quite nice to try and picture
