Front Flip 13 months ago

Really want to land a front flip on my skates. Have done one into a foam pit but want to do one onto solid ground!

If I’m going to learn to back flip I might as well put down front flip as a goal as well, how hard can it be anyway? I have no trouble doing it on a trampoline (Yeah, I know, Trampoline makes it 100 times easier…) This is something I feel I’m more then capable of learning though.

I can do one comfortably on trampoline and believe I can do one on the ground if I overcome my fears.

I can do it fine on a trampoline but i’m a bit scared about landing on my neck and breaking it!

i am going to do this 20 months ago

I can do a front handspring very well so I am going to work on doing this

I don’t think I have confidence to do it yet. Perhaps if someone can lift me on the first few attempts, I will feel more comfortable.

Im able to do a frontflip on flat ground (even though most of the time its a little low to the ground) but what do I have to do to clear my fear of doing a backflip? Ive heard alot of things, but nothings seemed to help me. I thinks its a lack of my self-confidence if that helps you to explain.

Look doing Front and Backflips are relatively easy, the very first time i done this I was successful with it. And i didnt even do it fight i forgot to swing my arms and i continued to do so for the next 2 weeks and i couldnt get enough air and landed on my butt several times but a while after that i learnt to swing my arms whilst doing it and become even better

don’t pay any attention to the kid who says this is impossible. It’s EASY. just takes balls.

First you have to mentally get ready, it’s not like most tricks i.e. on a snowboard where you can visuallize the whole thing, because you really can’t visualize a frontflip. The main thing to prepare yourself for doing it is to realize, if you fall, what are you going to land on? Your butt. Trust me, I’ve done it, and when you land on your rear you simply didn’t tuck enough/spin fast enough and because you haven’t spun fast enogh, there’s not much force when you hit the ground.

Second, get like a picninc blanket (My personal tool for both front and backflips) and lay it out on the grass. I would suggest a slight hill angle like 5 degrees to start with, but I’ve tried them on closer to 30 degree hills, uh-uh not happening for me.

back up from the picninc blanket about 1-12 steps whatever you feel comfortable building up to about 65-70% of your full spring speed in. practice running at the blankets and practice doing skip jumps, which I’ll describe in a moment, and landing on the blanket.

Now to explain the skip jump:
For those of you who have ever tried the triple jump in track and field, it’ll be easier to understand.
For those of you who haven’t, no biggie it’s a simple concept.
What you do is sprint at the spot you’re going to jump, build up your momentum, as this move is entirely about momentum. After about 10 steps, you should be going at a decent speed, now is when you jump of your preferred leg, Using just one leg, instead of stepping and continuing to run, you hesitate a bit and jump not out but up, like a high jump instead of a long jump.
You land on BOTH feet with them close together.

Now, if you try this, you will understand why you need to do the skip jump, it buildsforward momentum in your torso while at the same time causing you to move only SLIGHTLY forward, and mostly upward. This doesn’t make you jump higher, it makes you spin faster.

After practicing that a few times, then you flip.
To Flip:
Land off the skip jump on both feet, with knees SLIGHTLY BENT and push of the balls/toes of your feet to jump UP. You throw your arms towards wherever you wish to tuck. What’s always worked best for me was to basically grab my shins. Some people grab ankles. Anyways, throw your arms by slamming your wrists toward the air next to your shins/ankles/whatever, this gives you half the momentum you need for the flip. using just this and the skip jump you can easily make it to your butt. To finish the flip, you simply bring your legs up and backwards a bit and lean your torso forward. Your chin should almost be on your chest. Land on the balls of your feet again, and you’re done.
Remember if you don’t land the flip to put your arms out in front or back of you respective to your direction of fall.

DO NOT overdo this trick. Knowing from personal experience, I know that after about 5 any more than that oyu will really feel the impact in your shins the next day. Shin splints suck.
Sorry for the long one, but hopefully it helps you. Remember, most of the trick to doing a front flip on flat ground, and back flips as well, is getting up the courage to try it. If you REALLY must be a wuss about it, then fine, go to a gym and try them on the coil floors there, they are slightly more forgiveing, but not much of a difference.

I’ll post a tutorial for backflips up eventually.
