Oi! The headaches this will cause!
Ok, I said it’s worth it but that’s still to be determined.
I’m really hoping it’s going to be an awesome investment because getting through the buying process has been a true nightmare!
If you’re financially struggling (even just a little bit) to buy a place then I suggest you wait. No realtor in NYC wants to take on a client with a low budget. You’ll also end up moving into a co-op since those are considerably more affordable. If you buy a co-op be prepared for rules! I was quite surprised to be told that I couldn’t move into my own place on an evening or weekend… that I couldn’t renovate my own place without getting permission… and that I had to get permission for long terms guests.(the list goes on…)
If you buy a place anywhere – but particularly here – do your research! Everyone is looking out for their own best interest. Ask lots of questions and take detailed notes – it is so so so easy to get screwed!
Also try to get more space than you need right now (something I wish we had done). By the end of the process you’ll never want to move again!
For anyone who has this on your list – I wish you luck!
I love NYC. I remember visiting Manhattan in the 5th grade and thinking, “I love it here…I’ve got to live here.” Now fast forward 20 years later and I’m here and I still love it. It’s diverse, sophisticated, artsy, fast (and slow) and very expensive. I could move somewhere else and buy a condo for about half the money than it takes to own a small apartment in New York City…but it would not be the same. Right now, Manhattan is the only place I to live.
20% down, maintenance fees…mortgages…my head is spinning.
