I got to play Heratio in Hamlet in a High School production. :)
How to act in a Shakespeare play
How I did it: I auditioned a lot. I started with tiny roles-- I did several scenes and the Innkeeper in Taming of the Shew at a community Shakespeare festival. I studied with great Shakespeare teachers, where I learned First Folio technique.
I learned so much from seeing plays, reading the plays, taking class, running lines all the time and just being determined.
I love auditioning (it's just a tiny performance for a small audience) and I love performing even more. Being easy to get along with and responsible also helps.
Lessons & tips: Learn your lines early, share yourself with the audience.
Resources: Read Edelstein's Thinking Shakespeare (cheapest on Barnes and Nobel site). It was SO helpful, is brilliant.
