My room is functional, but it doesn’t suit me. The last time I bought any new furniture or did any decorating I was going for a modern, white, elegant vibe, when to be honest, I’m an earth tones and organised chaos kind of person.
I tried to create the space that I thought I should want, not what I really want and I’ve realised since then that more than what flows or makes sense I need to fill my room with things I like and enjoy. I’m not aiming for a particular style or feel, I just want a warm, cosy place I can hideaway from the world.
I need new flooring and paint desperately, because neither have being changed up in twenty years and you can tell. I’d love a new bed, and don’t like my current desk, so a second hand one would be awesome. Then there’s all the other little things I’ve found online and on pinterest that claim to be super cheap, but when you try and recreate them in a country that isn’t American nine times out of ten they end up super expensive. It has the potential to get super expensive, but I’m not in a position to be spending a lot of money.
Hopefully I can do everything I want and have a space I enjoy without breaking the bank. Fingers crossed. 4 months ago
How I did it: I looked around the room to see if all the furniture in the room were doing their job. If they needed to be changed, I found a suitable solution.
At the time I started on this goal, for my clothes I had a small built in wardrobe and small tallboy with four drawers. I knew I needed more space for my clothes as they always used to end up everywhere in my room. To solve this, I donated a lot of clothes that I no longer wore to my local Salvation Army and replaced the small tallboy with a larger lowboy with nine drawers which I bought secondhand and a set of plastic drawers with castors that was sitting in the garage.
For stationery, I had a bureau - this was doing a good job at storing things but I always found it a bit clumsy and too big for my room. Plus, I wanted a proper place to store and display all of my make up as well as use to get ready in the morning etc. To solve this, I took the bureau out of my room and bought a secondhand Queen Anne style dressing table. It came with five drawers with lots of space for my make up as well as a three-way mirror.
I also decided that I wanted to change my duvet covers to something that I really liked. I found one on sale and got matching pillow cases. I still really love the covers though it was a while ago that I got them now. The big pillows are probably the highlight of my room because it makes my bedroom feel like a place where I can really relax just by arranging a few pillows to suit whatever it is you are doing.
The last thing I did was to get new curtains. This was by far the most difficult thing because I kept wondering what could possibly go with the outdated carpet in my room. However, if I had known better, I wish I had disregarded the carpet and opened myself up to more options. Also, knowing how to calculate what size curtains you will need would really help big time when you are at a curtain store. I have attached links below if anyone needs help with this! So I’ve moved back home since repairs were being done including the repainting of walls. Now, the walls have a fresh coat of paint on them so they are looking beautiful. I changed rooms since moving back in so I no longer have new curtains or any curtains as a matter of fact, since we had to take them off during repairs. Once this is done, I can put a big tick next to this goal and I shall think of an appropriate way of celebrating. 16 months ago
How I did it:
I started by using an Organizing Project Planner
. I tidied, purged, re-organized and redecorated. I also have found inspirational photos online.
I think this area will always be a work in progress but for now I am quite happy on how it turned out. I might need to re-evaluate my bedroom at a later date.

I sold a chair I had in my room as a part of my “painting and selling a piece of furniture” goal. With the space it freed up I finally got space for a cupboard that has been living in my garage for probably half a year. It does a serious make-over but for now I need the space. I now finally have a space for my folders and this will free up a lot of space in my other cupboard. I am excited for some majoy organizing/purging this weekend! 20 months ago
I know I have too much crap in my room. I do have some problem with grtting rid of stuff and I do know that. But there are things like my painting supplies, scrapbooking supplies and knitting supplies that I do use, but not regularly. So I just do not know what to do with that stuff. But I was able to throw some stuff out and that makes me happy. I did a bit rearranging of the furniture as well. I am still not quite satisfied but it is getting there :) 21 months ago
Today I re-arranged my bedoom. I am not 100% happy with the results and have a lot of purging to do 21 months ago
How I did it: I went to Ikea to buy a new bed, sheets, nightstands and a closet. I changed my bookshelves. I put up new paintings, kept the clutter to a minimal, redecorated small stuff, moved furniture. So it feels like I'm in a whole new bedroom except for the wallpaper and curtains, there the same old ones as always. Read how I did it… 23 months ago
