I never lived close enough to my work to be able to cycle to it.
Anyway, when I lived in Holland (where everybody cycles) I tried to at least go to the train station with the bike. I actually though I would have loved it, and in fact I did, if it wasn’t for the fact that at the end of the summer it started being so fucking COLD that eventually I gave up.
In fact, of the whole cycling possibilty in Holland, I was extremely enthusiast at first since I like to cycle and I though I could have cycled a lot…. but eventually I grew tired of the fact that I found it waaaaaay too cold outdoot to actually DO cycle for more than 3 months a year….

Good Moments:
- Passing a traffic jam
- Zero Fuel Costs
Bad Moments:
- Skidding on some ice and sliding down the road on my side at 25mph
- Cycling through a flood that went above my knees – I was freezing cold and still had 7 miles to go…
Just treated myself to a new bike: a Giant OCR4
I have been cycling to work for about 9 years. It does take a little bit of logistical organisation, and it certainly helps if your employer has showering facilities/changing rooms, but once you get going, it’s a great feeling! Especially as you sail past the queues of traffic…
I leave my suit, work shoes (and spare socks and towel) at work. I bring clean shirts with me to work at the start of the week, and bring them home as they are used. I get soaked to the skin about once a year, which I figure is a small price to pay…
If you’re having trouble starting this, I recommend that you start with cycling one day a week (or just once a month!), and move on from there. It really isn’t too hard, you just need to start!
Unless it’s rainy rainy, I ride to work every day. Since I started this job last October, it’s been just a little over 3000 commuting miles (over 4000 miles total). A little less than 11 miles to work, 18 – 25 on the way home. Might as well get sweaty at the end of the day, right?
