I want to be able to buy a house within the next five or so years though. Any ideas on building credit without getting a credit card??
How I did it:
Lessons & tips: Pay more than the minimum on all your cards, even the one with the lowest interest, as paying more than the minimum gets you more points on your FICO score than just paying the minimum (maybe other people know this but I only found this out a year or two ago)
Resources: WAMU card with free monthly FICO score updates was very helpful in keeping track and didn't cost me anything. Also, Suze Orman's TV has helpful info about paying off debts.

I got an offer for a credit card in the mail yesterday so I decided to check my credit score and I discovered it was 706. I’m just so happy. It went from 525 and lower to now 706. It’s been about a year since I last checked the score. I didn’t think I could get it that high. So now I would like to get it even higher. It’s good to see my effort, education and determination are paying off. What helped me raise the score was paying off and settling any old debt, paying my car note off, paying my student loans on time and getting a secured credit card which I use every month to donate to Feeding America and pay it off in full monthly.

Well after paying off some of my credit card debt my credit score is now 597!! It is still really bad.. but better than how it was!
Can’t wait for it to get better! I KNOW IT WILL =)

I checked my credit report last month and it was 555!!! WOW.. that really sucks!!! I have 4 negative accounts! and my credit cards are almost to the limit!!
I decided to make a payment on my two credit cards to have my debt be less than 60%. I know it’s just the beginning but I hope it helps!!
Next step, payin off some of those damn negative accounts! UGH HATE IT! Especially because 3 of them I opened for other people =(
I should have had any late payments now in a long time. I hope my credit report starts to reflect that.
Plus I got a new credit card raising my available credit by quite a lot.
I have mastercard and visa, I want discover and amex. Just have to apply. My goal is no debt on any of the 4 major credit cards, and gold card or better for all of them.
My credit score isn’t the greatest. Paying my student loans late, having bad spending habits, or sometimes just forgetting to pay a damn bill! Bad credit follows you everywhere, or at least me. I only have one credit card and it’s maxed out, but I have a lot of unpaid doctor bills and what not. My life would be less stressful with a higher credit score.

Mine’s like 551 which is not surprising.
I figure it’s a two year goal.
First step: Maintain access to credit report—Done
Second step: Report all entries that do not look correct (investigate)—Done
Third Step: Start paying off collections, and make sure payments are on time.
I hope after 2 years my credit moves from about 680 to 700+ ... and to a good credit rating.
