DoctorTeethThat's Edutainment - and Sexy Too

I don’t really like Strip Clubs (the one and only time I’ve ever been I was so drunk I don’t really remember much of anything), but there’s been a resurgence of burlesque in the last 5-10 years and I was very interested in seeing something that was more than just tittilation. Something intelligent and entertaining as well as (hopefully) exciting.  A couple of my friends were in a burlesque production this summer at the Edmonton Fringe, and I thought I would go see what it was about.

The show itself was very good: a show about the six wives of Henry VIII, forced to put on a burlesque show for him every day since they were killed or died, so for the last 450 years. There were dances, monologues, arias, drama, and comedy. It was a brilliant show, more like a play with sexy dance numbers, not exactly what I was expecting from the word “burlesque” but thankfully so much more.

After the show I had a couple of drinks with the actresses, creators, director, and choreographer, and I was effusive in my praise for the show.  I told them how I was hesitant (even when I was hooting and hollering I felt wrong, but I knew that was the way I was supposed to show my appreciation for their performances) but that the show was so good and so different than what I was expecting.  One of the ladies said it wasn’t typical burlesque, it was “narrative burlesque,” which really turned my brain around on it.  It was more like what original burlesque was: comic treatment of serious matters. Except with real human drama and of course some alluring routines.  I definitely liked what I saw and would attend any of their future productions.  More straightforward, modern American-style burlesque will have to wait for another time where I’m more confident and comfortable, but I’ll go see the narrative/theatrical style without hesitation now. 21 months ago
