StrahaANP Hill in Afghanistan

So I spent yesterday working a road construction project leading up ANP Hill here in Maiwan. ANP Hill is really a mound that offers a great view of the local area. Located near the ruins of a British Fort built after the Maiwan uprising (1870s), ANP Hill served as an overwatch position for Alexander the Great’s Army.

Anyway, the US Army currently occupies ANP Hill, and now needs a road built up it. I was there yesterday, and the hill is littered with pottery shards. I’m guessing most are recent (the hill was used by the British, Soviets, and every other army coming through here), so there is a lot of history there.

I spent yesterday taking as many pictures of the different shards as I could. I also collected a cross section of shards to date. The Army has removed at least three feet of soil, so the stratigraphic record is a mess, but at least I was able to get some kind of archeological documentation.

This may not be abandoned building exploration in the traditional sense, but it is awfully close. 15 months ago
