I plan to move to Alaska in the next two years. I’m not sure to which part of Alaska yet but I am definitely going, no matter what.
How I did it: Well we saved our money for a long time. We finally made the decision this summer and have never looked back. Its was 4200 miles of the most beautiful journey I have ever had in my life. Cant wait for the winter to see if we are going to be true alaskans. Read how I did it…

I like Alaska, and I have to say I’ve met some crazy people and have some crazy stories from the state, but there is so much more to do out there. I think that AK is where criminals go to escape the law but still live in the US. If you want to live in AK for a long time, you have to be a specific type of person with a passion for the outdoors and an appreciation for solitude. At the same time you have to be rugged, and not care about pop culture at all. Everything in this state is permanently 10 years behind.

I love the idea of living out were there are trees as neighbors and have always been quite fond of alaska!! On top of it all my hubby wants to move there to! Its nice to know that we have alot of the same wants! It makes it easier to try things together!
I live in NYC and want to move to Fairbanks, AK. I’m disabled on Social Security with very low income. I live in an SRO apt./room in NYC and have Section 8. Does anyone know if there are any SRO type apt. bldgs. in Fairbanks or single room/studio rentals that take Section 8?
It has always been a dream of mine. We hope to save up enough money and go next Summer.
My husband and I are moving to Delta Junction AK (near ft. greely) in April 09, so looking forward to this. My husband has driven there and he loved it. Actually he is driving up there while I am there on business, he is staying and flying back when I am ready the end of May. Then we will drive my truck up together..Any information you can give me would be awesome. How about moving companies, has anyone used U-Ship? We have been planning this for a year now. Hope my house sells fast so we can get out of AZ..
The best thing I ever did! took us 7 days of beautiful driving to get up here to Fairbanks. Be prepared. We found this website http://www.fairbanksakusa.com/
that help us a lot around the town. Costs are higher here, but it’s like that in any remote place. Life is slower and more enjoyable here!
My wife and I are moving to alaska in spring of 2009. We are saving our money and selling everything we have. We have 2 children and we want to make a better life for them. We currently live in dallas, texas and frankly, we are sick of the heat. We have a friend that moved there a couple of years ago and he said he will never leave. The time cannot move quickly enough for us. We are bursting with joy anticipating the journey.
It was expensive to move all our stuff we had to leave most behind but brought all the animals lol through security in Seattle barging the vehicles and flying up. We accidently sent the cat through the xray machine- the security guy jumps up and screams theres something alive in here! They made us take the other cat, rabbit and gerbils out of their crates and walk them through, with 2 little kids in tow mind you. It was an experience. We love it here where we are but it is expensive for rents and for food and supplies. My grocery bill is close to twice as much now. Be prepared is all I can say. The schools are excellent, nature is wild, there is wildlife all over the cities -parks, moose, trees, bears, its different from any place Ive ever seen. Best time to come is in May-Sept. I survived the winter, wasnt as bad as I thought it would be bout the same as montana a little darker earlier in the day but close. Good Luck its an adventure.

cuculus asks,
“Are there any great resources for helping my decision to move to Alaska? My wife and I newly married and ready for an adventure. We're thinking Korea, the West Coast of the lower 48 or...Alaska. She wants to teach and I'll do just about anything.”
