How I did it: I say it only took one day because all it really took was for me to show up at a practice. I've been involved for about six months now, and will be refereeing at our second public bout in a few days. All I did was show up, learn the rules, help out with a chore or two, show up some more, attend (host) a few meetings, keep showing up... Lessons & tips: Just locate your local group, whether by posters on telephone poles or the Internet, and offer your services. Like ALL such organizations, there is never a shortage of things to be done, and always a need for people to do them. A note to men: while roller derby has a sexy and kinky image, it attracts a lot of feminist types because many women feels that it represents female "empowerment". Unless you come into it with a female partner who is involved, or you're unusually charming, you'll probably feel as if you're somewhat on the periphery of the group. That's also partly because we men are simply not very involved in the athletic side of roller derby, and don't form the same bonds as athletes in any other sport. I’m sooooooooooo far behind!! I’ve been doing this for weeks, but too many other things, like work, take priority over writing on 43T. But the current frigid weather is going to keep me inside and away from work for a couple of weeks. (Yay!!! LOL) So time to catch up.

I started as an “official”, keeping time at a practise one week. I was embarrassed about putting on roller skates after thirty years – which is longer than most of the girls have been alive! ROFL – and probably falling on my butt or at least being awkward. Eventually, I talked myself into it and put skates on. One of the other referees gave me some pointers, and I’m getting better every week.

Here’s the thing: what’s the point of being involved in roller derby if you won’t skate??? LOL So being on skates allows me to function as a referee (either pack ref or jammer ref) and that’s lots of fun!
