"Inspired me to make my own list."
How I did it: Lots of Netflix and library visits. I only really started making the effort as a 2007 New Year's Resolution. I will say this, when you get down to the final 10, you get OBSESSED. Well I did. I actually lost large amounts of sleep trying to finish the list.
Lessons & tips: The list is majorly lacking in women, minorities, gays, and...fiction, really. BUT watching it made me realize than I am my own authority when it comes to the "Best" movies. AFI should rename ALL their lists, The Top 100 "Most Influential." Their numbering system is also beyond arbitrary. So, if you find yourself watching these movies and thinking, "Am I missing something?" It doesn't matter. You obviously love movies. Go find movies you love.
Resources: The library and Netflix. The library was able to snag copies of hard-to-finds, and Netflix has a fairly impressive selection. I also went to the AMC and TCM websites and paid attention to when certain AFI movies would be on. Typically...and this is not hard and fast...if it was TCM, I liked it. If it was on AMC...I didn't like it. And if I had to get it from the library, I appreciated it, respected it, and likely wouldn't watch it again.
