Finally! 16 months ago

I’ve always thought of myself as musical; been called a “musician that doesn’t play,” by a musician boyfriend. (Very flattering!) January 8, 2008, saw a poster advertising a local mandolin teacher, went to the music store, bought an inexpensive A-style with F holes, and called the teacher on my cell, from the music store, to schedule my first lesson the following week. (Merry 55th Christmas to me!) Love it, love it, love it, despite all the hours and hard work. Am slowly making progress, and have the dead fingertips & calouses to prove it. Love bluegrass but also other types (classical, celtic, latin american, folk) fortunately, cause bluegrass playing is at such lightening speeds (unlikely to be achieved at 55) and not particularly expressive, which is what I prefer. LOVE Peter Ostroushko’s playing, and he lives in my area. Will see him live soon, as well as Andy Statman Trio from NY. MandoCafe site is a great resource, as is Folk of the Woods, which has great FAQ sections on any accoustic instrument. So far, well worth the blood, sweat and tears.

taking mandolin lessons now for 6 months. weekly sessions and i’m also learning to read music too. slowly but surely. one thing about learning an instrument, one never stops learning as long as one keeps playing. a lifelong pursuit i look forward to doing into my old age…
